The University of Rochester is one of the nation's leading private universities, with many programs rated among the best in the country. Offering over 50 doctoral and 90 master's programs, its schools include the School of Medicine and Dentistry, the William E. Simon Graduate School of Business Administration, the College of Arts & Science, the College of Engineering and Applied Science, the Graduate School of Education and Human Development, and the School of Nursing.Indicators of the university's stature include: Rochester's endowment was the 20th largest in the country as of June 30, 1991; recent comparisons ranked the university 12th among private universities nationwide in federally-financed research and development; the university is a member of the Association of American Universities.

Many of its research facilities are unique: The Laboratory for Laser Energetics houses the largest laser in a university setting in the nation. Sibley Music Library at the famed Eastman School of Music in one of the foremost music research libraries in the world. The Institute of Optics, founded in 1929, is widely considered the nation's premier optics school, a leader in basic optical research.

The University has an exceptionally low ratio of students to professors-about eight to one-and a faculty of national distinction. There are 4,900 full-time undergraduates and 2,500 graduate and professional students.

University housing facilities for graduate students include apartments, townhouses and a limited number of bungalows or maisonettes. Minority enrollment is 15% among full-time graduates and undergraduates. Hispanics make up 4% of the total full-time enrollment.
