Located 90 miles southeast of Chicago, Notre Dame offers 23 doctoral and 36 master's degree programs in 33 departments and institutes including: aerospace, chemical, civil, computer, and electrical engineering, chemistry and biochemistry, biological sciences, government and international studies, history and philosophy of science, mathematics, medieval studies, theology, philosophy, physics, and psychology.

Two prominent institutes for social studies affiliated with Notre Dame are the Jane Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies and the Helen Kellogg Institute for International Studies, which is recognized as one of the nation's premier centers for Latin American Studies.The Radiation Laboratory, supported by the Department of Energy, attracts radiation chemists from as many as 30 institutions worldwide each year. The Hessert Center for Aerospace Research houses eight wind and smoke tunnels for aeronautical studies (Notre Dame has led the way in wind and smoke tunnel research since the 1930's). The University of Notre Dame Environmental Research Center (UNDERC) overlapping the Wisconsin-Michigan border, encompasses 8,000 acres and 27 lakes for ecological studies.The University was founded in 1842 by a priest of the Congregation of Holy Cross. Today, the undergraduate student population is approximately 7,600 and the graduate and professional student enrollment is approximately 2,500. Minorities account for approximately 12% and Hispanics for 5% of the total.

On-campus family housing is available, as are apartments and men's and women's residence halls.
