Sheriffs Print Shop Custody Supervisor
Salary: $18.24-$22.26 hourly / $3,172-$3,872 monthly / Range:
DEFINITION: Under direction, schedules and organizes the
operations of the Sheriff's Print Shop; trains and supervises
minimum security inmates in the operation and maintenance of offset
and related equipment; and performs related duties as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This is a single position class
which oversees the operations and maintenance of the Sheriff's Print
Shop. This class is distinguished from Reprographics Manager in that
the latter is responsible for supervision of employees and the
operations of the County's Print Shop serving all County
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
1. Schedules work orders to ensure completion in a timely manner;
directs inmates in offset printing or related work; reviews
completed work orders prior to customer pick up.
2. Provides training to inmates in operation and maintenance of
offset, cutter, binder, jogger, sorter and other related equipment;
demonstrates equipment operation and maintenance; monitors inmates
in performing new tasks to provide feedback as needed.
3. Identifies and trouble shoots equipment failures, production and
quality inhibitors; makes minor repairs to equipment; contacts
repair services for major repairs of equipment.
4. Contacts private print shops to review equipment being utilized;
contacts vendors and suppliers to obtain information about new
offset equipment; evaluates purchase of new equipment for training
purposes and makes recommendations to management.
5. Identifies employment opportunities for inmates by contacting
private print shops; meets with employers to inform them about
inmate training on offset equipment; assists inmates in applying for
employment opportunities; and arranges for inmates to be interviewed
and assessed for employment.
6. Contacts various public sector organizations to inform them about
the offset printing services available from the Sheriff's Print
Shop; prepares cost estimates of duplicating work orders.
7. Performs various duplicating work as needed to meet deadlines
including making plates, operating offset and related equipment to
complete work orders.
8. Operates various computer programs in order to determine costs
and billing amounts, make changes to forms, and rotate ink stock.
1. Three years of experience operating and maintaining offset and
related equipment; or,
2. one year of experience performing duties equivalent to the class
of Offset Equipment Operator with Santa Barbara County; or,
3. equivalent combination of training, education, and experience
that would provide the required knowledge and abilities.
Knowledge of: offset equipment operation and maintenance;
reproduction techniques and procedures; auxiliary printing equipment
operation and maintenance such as collators, binders and plate
makers; computer operations; and basic math.
Ability to: independently operate and maintain offset and related
equipment; plan workload and set priorities to meet deadlines; train
others in operating and maintaining offset and related equipment;
collect and analyze information to evaluate purchase of new
equipment; maintain various equipment and work records; read and
understand equipment manuals; establish and maintain effective
working relationships with people from various socioeconomic and

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION: Incumbent will be required to work with
inmates in a secured area. Applicants will be required to pass a
background investigation. Current or excessive use of drugs, sale of
drugs, serious criminal history or deception relating to employment
history may bar employment.
Possession of valid California Class C Driver's license is required
for this position.
