Recycle Worker Leader

Salary: $22.51-$27.48 hourly / $3,914-$4,779 monthly / Range: 5576

DEFINITION: Under general supervision, coordinates and participates in the work of a crew engaged in recycling activities at Public Works recycling center and offsite as necessary; and performs related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This is the lead worker level in the series. This class is distinguished from Recycle Worker II by being regularly assigned to lead the work of a recycle crew, coordinate the movement of recycling materials into and out of the recycling center, and operate heavy equipment. This class is distinguished from Heavy Equipment Operator by the latter's primary assignment to operate heavy equipment.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

1. Schedules and assigns work to a crew of recycle workers; oversees daily operations of recycle yard; supervises daily clean-up of recycle yard; directs workers in the safe operation of balers and forklifts; may act as supervisor in the absence of a refuse supervisor.
2. Operates a variety of light and heavy equipment, such as loaders, balers, forklifts, trucks, and tractor-trailer combinations; loads flat-beds and shipping containers; services equipment operated and makes minor repairs and adjustments.
3. Schedules movement of recycling materials into and out of storage areas; coordinates shipment of materials with shipping brokers and processing companies receiving shipments.
4. Maintains logs of recycling materials received and shipped to processing companies; completes bills of loading, statements of shipping records and customer receipts.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:

1. Two years of experience coordinating the movement and storage of recyclable materials or products, including the operation of heavy equipment; or,
2. one year of experience performing duties equivalent to the class of Recycle Worker II with Santa Barbara County, including the operation of heavy equipment; or,
3. any combination of training, education and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license.

Knowledge of: the operation and routine maintenance of light and heavy equipment; recycling equipment, vehicle and heavy equipment safety practices; methods for processing recycling materials; basic recordkeeping.

Skill in: operating recycle equipment and heavy equipment.

Ability to: perform moderately heavy physical labor under all types of outdoor weather conditions; coordinate the movement of materials and equipment; maintain records and prepare reports; communicate effectively with representatives from public and private agencies; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships; train and supervise others.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Incumbents in this class perform moderately heavy physical labor involving the full range of body movements involving reaching, bending, grasping, climbing and lifting. A major portion of the recycling tasks are performed outdoors in all types of weather conditions.
