Radiologic Technologist, Supervising

Salary: $23.73-$28.97 hourly / $4,127-$5,038 monthly / Range: 5682

DEFINITION: Under general direction, plans and supervises the work of technical and clerical personnel in the operation of an outpatient Radiology Service at multiple County clinic locations; and performs related duties as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This class is distinguished from the Radiologic Technologist by its emphasis on supervision of subordinate radiological and clerical personnel, performance of administrative tasks, and assumption of overall responsibility for the integrity, quality control, and performance of the Radiology Service. The primary emphasis of the Radiologic Technologist class is on the performance of radiological examinations.


1. Plans and schedules the work of subordinate personnel to ensure the most effective utilization of personnel and equipment, and greatest convenience to patients and physicians; hires, trains, and evaluates subordinate staff; confers with physicians to determine whether quality of images produced by staff is sufficient; instructs subordinate personnel in radiological procedures and quality control as appropriate.
2. Prepares annual Radiology Service budget and monitors budget throughout fiscal year, using appropriate spreadsheet and database software; reviews records of patient charges from Radiology to determine competitiveness of department's fee structure as compared to private providers; requisitions supplies and materials; monitors vendor contracts to ensure that services are provided in accordance with terms of contract; maintains a continuing program of machine and equipment maintenance.
3. Confers with Public Health Department staff to determine policy and procedural standards; coordinates work of the Radiology Service with other County clinic locations and public health programs and contract agencies; ensures compliance with appropriate licensing requirements and with relevant safety and hazardous waste rules and regulations.
4. Makes routine and special radiological examinations.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS: Registration as a Certified Radiologic Technologist in the State of California, registration with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT), and:

1. three years of experience performing a variety of diagnostic radiological procedures; or,
2. three years of experience performing duties equivalent to Radiologic Technologist with Santa Barbara County; or,
3. equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that would provide the required knowledge, abilities, and registrations.

Knowledge of: anatomy; physiology; physics, electricity, and related physical sciences as applied to radiological techniques; positioning techniques and placements for radiological exams; safe work practices and safety regulations as they relate to radiological services.

Ability to: position patients for a wide variety of diagnostic examinations and therapy treatments; plan, assign, organize, prioritize, and delegate work of self and others; establish effective working relationships with patients, physicians, colleagues, and subordinates; learn and apply sound supervisory practices and related rules, regulations, procedures, and laws; learn to prepare and monitor a budget; explain technical information to others; work cooperatively with others; learn and apply principles and practices of contract administration.
