Park Ranger

Salary: $16.26-$19.85 hourly / $2,828-$3,452 monthly / Range: 4924

DEFINITION: Under supervision, performs visitor service, patrol, semi-skilled park maintenance work, grounds-keeping, and cleaning work; and performs related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Performs semi-skilled park maintenance work, visitor service, and patrol duties such as: requests assistance for public safety and medical services; may provide first aid; opens and closes park; maintains, repairs and assists in construction park structures, facilities and systems, by performing semi-skilled maintenance work such as repairing faucets, replacing sprinkler heads, painting, fixing picnic benches, unclogging drains, pouring concrete, and welding metal for barbecue grills; operates and performs routine servicing for a variety of hand tools, power tools and light equipment including chain and table saws, sanders, drills, cutting torches, chippers, skip loaders with attachments, rototillers, riding and push mowers, weed whips and ground sweepers; write work orders and prepare reports as needed; checks visitors into parks, collects fees, issues permits and assigns use areas; and provides visitors information; patrols park lands and waterways by walking, driving or boat; interprets and enforces pertinent rules, regulations and ordinances by warning or issuing citations; performs groundskeeping and cleaning tasks such as: mows, weeds, waters, edges, renovates and fertilizes lawns; prunes; identifies and reports plant problems; monitors and adjusts irrigation systems; collects and removes debris, trash and litter; and cleans walkways, restrooms and other park facilities.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:

1. Six months experience in groundskeeping or semi-skilled maintenance work; or,
2. six months performing duties equivalent to the class of Park Ranger Trainee in Santa Barbara County; or,
3. equivalent combination of training, education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities.

Knowledge of: the use and routine servicing of basic hand tools, power tools and light equipment used in groundskeeping and cleaning work; basic materials and methods used in groundskeeping and cleaning work; the tools, equipment and methods used in semi-skilled maintenance.

Ability to: use basic arithmetic and learn the methods used in receiving, accurately recording and safeguarding money; write short reports; learn, understand and convey park rules and regulations; deal tactfully and effectively with the public; and understand and follow simple oral and written instructions.

Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License is required.
