DEFINITION: Under direction, supervises and participates in the
laundering of clothing and bedding for the County Jail, and performs
other duties as may be assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This class is responsible for
laundry inventory and cleaning services for the County Jail division
of the Sheriff's Department. Incumbents train, plan, organize and
supervise the work of a crew of inmates who operate laundry and
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
1. Orders, receives, disburses and monitors use of cleaning
supplies; prepares and monitors inventories of supplies, clothing,
and bedding; operates heat transfer machine for stenciling of jail
clothing; monitors condition of clothing and bedding supplies to
replace if necessary; oversees and maintains supply rooms.
2. Selects, trains, and supervises the work of a crew of inmates;
provides training in sorting, weighing and cleaning of laundry and
bedding and for tailoring and repair of clothing and bedding;
handles simple personnel problems; reviews more complex personnel
problems with department/detention facility supervisor and
recommends solutions; reviews work of inmates for completeness and
accuracy; provides light maintenance of sewing machines.
3. Operates cleaning equipment, washing machines and dryers; sorts
and weighs laundry; folds clean laundry and sorts for return to
proper facility; provides light maintenance of equipment.
4. Provides daily and weekly maintenance of water reclamation
system; visually checks pressure gauges for any adjustments; adds
chemicals to augment or correct proportions; back flushes system;
changes oil in compressors.
5. Supervises washing and/or destruction of contaminated clothing;
assesses amount and kind of contamination to advise staff of proper
handling precautions; oversees proper disinfection of machinery used
in cleaning processes.
1. One year progressively responsible experience in a commercial or
institutional laundry with supervision responsibilities; or,
2. one year working within the classification of Sheriff's Utility
Worker with Santa Barbara County; or,
3. equivalent combination of training, education, or experience that
would provide the required knowledge and abilities.
Knowledge of: methods and practices used in cleaning, laundering and
repair of clothing and bedding; various cleaning supplies, soaps,
solvents and disinfectants; operation of washing machines and
dryers; methods of inventory; training and supervision; techniques
used in simple tailoring of clothing.
Ability to: develop and implement operational procedures; organize
and prioritize daily work assignments; learn techniques of
supervision specific to inmate population; effectively train and
supervise persons of varying social and economic backgrounds; learn
to use and train for heat transfer machines; comply with laws,
regulations and professional practices governing laundry program
services and operations; maintain accurate records and document
actions taken; understand laundry machinery to make minor repairs
and adjustments; make routine arithmetical calculations; work
independently under general direction.
Special Requirements: Possession of a valid California Class C
Driver's License, ability to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds
above and below the neck, and work with toxic or hazardous
