Health Services Laboratory Supervisor

Salary: $36.33-$44.35 hourly / $6,319-$7,714 monthly / Range: 6536

DEFINITION: Under general direction, plans and coordinates the activities of an approved laboratory in which are preformed a variety of routine and specialized tests and analysis of body fluids and substances to provide data used in the diagnosis and treatment of disease or in legal proceedings; performs related duties as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This class is distinguished by its overall administrative responsibility for an entire laboratory, in contrast to Clinical Laboratory Technologist, Senior, or Forensic Toxicologist, which supervises a section, or sections of the laboratory.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Plans, coordinates, supervises, and participates in the activities of the specialized sections of an approved laboratory in which are performed a wide variety of standardized, routine and specialized, tests and analysis in such areas as chemistry, immunology, bacteriology, urinalysis, hematology, immunohematology, toxicology; reviews the work technologists and trainees to ensure that prescribed standards and deadlines are observed; keeps abreast of changes in the field, and implements approved new methods, procedures, and materials; ensures application of appropriate quality controls, recording systems, documentation, workload statistics, calibration and maintenance of equipment, cleanliness and orderliness of all areas of the laboratory, requisitioning of supplies and equipment, and related responsibilities; selects and evaluates employees; controls overtime; participates in budget planning and expenditure control; keeps records; prepares reports; and performs other administrative and technical duties as required.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS: Possession of valid Clinical Laboratory Technologist License issued by the State of California. (Registration as a medical Technologist with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, and supervisory experience are highly desirable) and,

1. three years of increasing-responsible professional experience in working as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist; or,
2. two years of experience performing duties equivalent to the class of Clinical Laboratory Technologist, Senior, with Santa Barbara County; or,
3. equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that would provide the required knowledge, abilities, and license.

Knowledge of: standardized, routine, and special tests in hematology, serology, toxicology chemistry, urinalysis, bacteriology, and blood matching and grouping.

Ability to: perform tests and analysis which are required; plan, coordinate, and supervise the work of others; establish effective working relationships with the medical staff and with co-workers.
