Health Services Aide

Salary: $12.75-$15.56 hourly / $2,217-$2,706 monthly / Range: 4436

DEFINITION: Under immediate supervision, assists professional staff in the delivery of health care or other public services in clinics or, under Public Health Nurse direction, on outreach visits; and performs related duties as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This classification is distinguished from Health Services Aide, Senior in that the emphasis of Health Services Aide is on clinic assignments while the focus of Health Services Aide, Senior is on outreach that is accomplished by conducting home visits.


1. Interprets for professional staff when language or cultural barriers exist.
2. Interviews clients to collect medical history data for physician review; records data on a variety of forms; and prepares simple patient-related documentation in medical records and other narrative reports.
3. Arranges appointments and follows up on broken appointments to explain need for and value of services; instructs clients in health care, following physicians instructions, and diets; and explains departmental services to clients.
4. Sets up examining room for procedures, prepares patients for examination, and assists professional staff during examinations.
5. Takes and records oral, aural, and rectal temperatures, radial pulses, blood pressures, weights, and heights; collects urine, stool, and other specimens; and prepares specimens for lab, transport to lab, and physician review.
6. Orders supplies, maintains inventory control, cleans and sterilizes equipment, appropriately stocks clinics, maintains security of medicine cabinets; performs light cleaning duties such as wiping walls, counters, etc.; and disposes of bio-hazardous materials in accordance with policy.
7. May perform and record simple lab tests such as blood glucose screens, urine dipsticks, and pregnancy tests.
8. May perform audiometric screening exams.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS: Any combination of training, education, and experience that would provide the required abilities.

Desirable Qualification: Experience working in a health care or human services setting is highly desirable.

Ability to: understand the needs and problems facing culturally, economically, or socially disadvantaged persons; establish and maintain good relations with persons from a wide range of social and ethnic groups; learn the range of departmental services for the treatment of health, nutrition, or other related problems; communicate effectively orally and by writing simple narrative reports; maintain confidentiality of client information; understand and follow oral and written instructions; work cooperatively as part of a health services delivery team.
