DEFINITION: Under direction, to function in a staff assignment, or be in command of a fire station for a specified period of time, with responsibility for supervising a fire prevention section, fire suppression training, and presuppression activities; and to perform related duties as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This is a supervisory class and reports to a Fire Chief, Fire Battalion Chief, or Division Chief, with primary responsibility for the integrity, coordination, and performance of a team of firefighting personnel in a fire station, or staff capacity as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Responds to emergencies and makes decisions related to emergency management and fireground operations; directs firefighting and related life and property protection until relieved by a superior officer; as necessary, commands engine companies, truck companies, or specialized resources; supervises the routine maintenance of station and grounds and of all apparatus and equipment assigned to the station; trains and drills assigned personnel in various phases of fire prevention, fire suppression, and presuppression activities according to the training plan; supervises and participates in mandated physical fitness activities with assigned personnel; inspects residential and commercial occupancies, open areas, and other conditions and locations to detect and correct fire hazards or life-threatening situations; educates the public in fire prevention; maintains the station daily journal and prepares periodic and special activity reports; observes and reports on performance and potential of subordinates; may act as relief for superior officer when necessary; in staff assignments, may supervise a fire protection section or maintenance activities, or coordinate training activities; and perform related tasks as required.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS: Possession of a valid California Class B Commercial or a Class B Restricted Firefighter Driver's License is required; and:

1. Three years of increasingly responsible experience in firefighting, including experience performing duties equivalent to the class of Fire Engineer-Inspector with Santa Barbara County; or,
2. a combination of training, education, and experience that is equivalent to the employment standard listed above and that provides the required knowledge and abilities. (A standing on the current Santa Barbara County Fire Engineer-Inspector eligible list will satisfy the required Fire Engineer-Inspector experience.)

Applicants hired after December 26, 1988, shall be disqualified from further employment consideration if they use tobacco products in any form, on or off duty.

Knowledge of: fire prevention and fire suppression methods; federal, state, and county laws and regulations pertaining to fire protection; operation and maintenance of all types of firefighting and rescue equipment; local geography, including roads and water supply systems; all elements of the Departmental Policies and Procedures and the Incident Command System.

Ability to: supervise subordinates, including evaluation of performance and administration of disciplinary procedures when necessary; train and develop subordinates; direct emergency operations; live and work harmoniously in close and continued contact with others; establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public.
