Elections Assistant

DEFINITION: Under general supervision provides procedural and technical support services in preparation, organization, and conduct of County supervised elections; and performs related duties as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: Incumbents in this class learn to perform the full range of duties involved in the election process. Incumbents are expected to learn the full range of duties and work at the journey level within six months to a year. Incumbents may serve as lead workers and supervise electoral assistants in peak periods. This class is distinguished from general clerical classifications by application of technical knowledge of election codes and procedures.


1. Plans, coordinates, and enforces candidate and committee filing compliance program; proofreads official/sample ballot copy; researches elections files.
2. Recruits, selects, and trains election inspectors and workers; recruits, inspects, and selects polling places; maintains records of workers and polling places.
3. Plans and coordinates voter registration through outreach programs and other agencies efforts; provides training on proper registration methods; prepares summary information regarding type and sources of voter registrations; and ensures currency of voter registrations.
4. Supervises, trains, and assists Elections staff on input of elections data including candidate filings, petitions, and new registrations.
5. Provides information regarding election laws; assists in conducting elections.


1. Four years of progressively responsible clerical experience; or,
2. one year of experience performing duties equivalent to a Office Assistant, Senior with Santa Barbara County; or,
3. a combination of training, education, and experience that is equivalent to one of the employment standards listed above and that provides the required knowledge and abilities.

Knowledge of: Office practices and procedures, current computer programs, such as MS Word, proper use of English language and basic math skills.

Ability to: plan, coordinate, and schedule work to meet strict deadlines; read, learn, comprehend, interpret, and implement election laws; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; organize and present information in a clear an concise manner; analyze situations and adopt a proper course of action; write memos and procedures using correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling; promote courteous service to the public; maintain working relationships with public, staff, and other public agencies.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Experience leading or supervising staff, and experience interpreting and applying laws and regulations is highly desirable.
