Communications Equipment Technician, Senior

Salary: $25.37-$30.97 hourly / $4,412-$5,387 monthly / Range: 5816

DEFINITION: Under general direction, installs, maintains, tests, calibrates, and repairs equipment used in the County's microwave and 2-way radio systems; and performs related duties as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This class is distinguished from that of the Communications Equipment Technician II in that the Communications Equipment Technician, Senior performs the most specialized and complex duties pertaining to both microwave and 2-way radio systems, and performs with a greater degree of independence. This class differs from Communications Systems Supervisor in that the latter class acts in a supervisory capacity over other technical staff.


1. Installs, maintains, and repairs 2, 6, and 10 GHZ microwave systems, including associated multiplex, switching equipment, and alarm systems. Diagnoses and isolates defects in microwave systems, using schematic diagrams and electronic testing equipment such as: microwave signal generators, frequency selective level meters, frequency counters, microwave power meters, transmission test sets, and voltmeters. Performs routine maintenance including checking power output, reflective power, and performance degradation.
2. Interfaces microwave system to radio, telephone, data and telemetry equipment using T-1 or DSO circuits.
3. Installs, maintains, and repairs FM 2-way radio systems including base stations, mobile radios, portable radios, and paging receivers. Diagnoses and isolates defects in radio equipment. using schematic diagrams and electronic testing equipment such as: service monitors, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, tone generators, power meters, and voltmeters. Adjusts and maintains radio systems to insure efficient operation and compliance with FCC regulations.
4. Maintains accurate service records of work performed on microwave and radio communications equipment.
5. Climbs poles and radio towers in order to install and maintain antenna and cable systems and to inspect towers for safety and structural integrity.


1. Four years of experience in the maintenance and repair of microwave communication systems and/or 2-way radio systems; or,
2. one year of experience performing duties equivalent to the class of Communications Equipment Technician II with Santa Barbara County; or,
3. a combination of training, education, and experience that is equivalent to one of the employment standards listed above and that provides the required knowledge and abilities.

Additional Qualifications: Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License.

Knowledge of: 2-way radio and electronics theory; troubleshooting techniques for electronic communications systems; the construction, assembly, repair, and operation of modern solid state microwave and 2-way transmitting and receiving equipment, microwave systems; safe climbing procedures; Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations pertaining to microwave and radio communications.

Ability to: use specialized test and calibration equipment to diagnose and repair defects and causes of interference in microwave and 2-way radio systems; interpret schematic diagrams; use personal computers to program and diagnose communications equipment; work independently; perform complex system level diagnoses and adjustments; climb poles and towers in excess of 100 feet in height; maintain records; communicate effectively with other employees and equipment suppliers.

Supplemental Information: Performing the essential functions of this job requires the incumbent to: lift objects weighing up to 75 pounds; work on towers at heights in excess of 100 feet; work in confined spaces; perform full range of body motions involving reaching, bending, grasping, and climbing; and possess color vision.
