CCS Caseworker

Salary: $16.03-$19.57 hourly / $2,789-$3,404 monthly / Range: 4896

DEFINITION: Under general supervision, determines eligibility and fees for applicants for California Children's Services (CCS), a state-mandated program to subsidize medical care and provide medical case management for children with physical disabilities; functions as part of a multidisciplinary team to manage assigned cases on a continuing basis; and performs related duties as required.


1. Receives and reviews referrals and applications for financial assistance under California Children's Services; interviews and screens applicants; determines residential and financial eligibility, according to state guidelines and program practices; collects information from parents, schools, health care providers, and others regarding medical, residential, and financial eligibility; explains program requirements for eligibility and payment to family and medical providers; refers family to Department of Social Services for Medi-Cal application when appropriate under program regulations; performs annual review and renewal of financial eligibility; closes CCS cases when clients are no longer eligible and advises parents and doctors of status.
2. Requests and reviews medical reports of diagnosis and treatment; maintains medical report files and sends copies to related health and other providers as authorized; maintains computerized case database; refers and transfers cases to other agencies and counties; maintains related files; sends required Notices of Action and advises families of appeal process; compiles program statistics and assists in review of program operation.
3. Determines fees as applicable and collects fees; issues CCS authorizations for payment of services; reviews billing against authorized services.


1. One year of experience providing client services or clerical support in a medical or social service setting; or,
2. one year of experience performing duties equivalent to Health Services Aide or Social Service Case Aide with Santa Barbara County; or,
3. a combination of training, education, and experience that is equivalent to one of the employment standards listed above and that provides the required knowledge and abilities.

Additional Requirements: Fluency in reading, writing, and speaking a foreign language, such as Spanish, may be required for some positions. Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License may be required for some positions in this class.

Knowledge of: standard office practices and procedures; recordkeeping; interviewing techniques; standard English grammar and usage; and basic medical terminology.

Ability to: gather, record, and evaluate information; learn CCS program guidelines and procedures and related medical terminology; learn applicable medical specialties and related health providers; interpret and apply guidelines; organize and prioritize work; perform highly detailed work with accuracy; prepare correspondence and chart documentation; maintain accurate records; maintain confidentiality; exercise objectivity; explain aspects of program and medical treatment to patients and families; work as part of a team; develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with patients, families, health care providers, and state and other program-related agencies; perform basic arithmetic calculations; and recognize and refer complex eligibility and case management problems.
