Cable Television Staff Assistant
Salary: $16.21-$19.79 hourly / $2,820-$3,442 monthly / Range:
DEFINITION: Under general supervision, provides technical support
to county-wide cable television production activities, including
Government Access Television; and performs related duties as
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This class is distinguished by its
technical role in cable television activities as well as providing
general staff support. It differs from the GATV Manager by the
latter's overall responsibility for supervising the daily operation
of cable television production activities.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
1. Provides technical assistance in the broadcast, videotape, and
rebroadcast of meetings of the Board of Supervisors, Planning
Commission, and other public agencies or community groups;
duplicates and distributes copies of meeting videotapes; acts as
video producer/director for Government Access Television programs.
2. Operates video and related equipment used in the production of
cable television and related activities, including video cameras,
remote cameras, video server, DVD recorders, �" SVHS, audio mixers,
studio switcher/character generator, non-linear editing system,
video projectors, video editing equipment, 35 mm and digital photo
cameras, satellite receiver, and teleconferencing systems.
3. Uses document-formatting software and office automation software
to provide general office support, including maintaining an office
supply inventory, air logs, videotape archives, usage records, and

channel and programming, including preparation and distribution of
the cablecast program guide, character generator information, and
press releases; creates computer graphics for television
5. Trains, monitors, and prepares work schedules for videographers
and interns, and maintains regular communication with area colleges
and universities regarding internship programs.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS: At least one year of technical television
production experience in commercial, public broadcast, and/or cable
television that would provide the required knowledge and abilities.
Additional Qualifications: Possession of a valid California Class C
Driver's License is required.
Knowledge of: videography and the basics of television and video
production; video production equipment operation; effective methods
for training others; and general office equipment and procedures,
document-formatting software and office automation software (such as
word processing, spreadsheet, database management, and presentation
Ability to: learn state and federal laws and regulations concerning
the operation of cable television systems and broadcasting through a
cable system; operate video production and related equipment;
schedule the work of and train others; communicate effectively
orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working
relationships; work accurately under pressure; create and maintain
effective filing systems.
Desirable Qualifications: Successful completion of
intermediate/advanced computer graphics hardware and software
coursework and training in communications and media presentation
tools for television is desirable.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION: Operations may require work outside normal
business hours and independent travel throughout the County.
