This writer doesn't just repeat her resume in her cover letter.
Instead, she explains how all of these things can be useful to the
reader.
Her resume does an excellent job of enumerating productivity
though her Honors and Activities segment could be more effectively
formatted.

Dear Mr. Lane,
I recently heard from Ashley Jones, a
volunteer at your office, that your clinic is looking for more
volunteers. As a patient at your clinic in September 1997 and April
2000, I was very impressed by the high quality of employees you had, and
I would feel privileged to work with such a knowledgeable and personable
staff.
I am currently enrolled at Louisiana
State University, majoring in kinesiology with aspirations to attend
physical therapy school. Since my enrollment in the fall of 2001, I
have held numerous jobs to fund my education. As a result of this, I
have yet to start my volunteer hours and would like to volunteer at your
clinic regularly this summer.
As a manger of the LSU Track and
Field teams, I know that your clinic provides injury rehabilitation for
many LSU athletes. Athletic rehabilitation is an aspect of physical
therapy in which I have a growing interest.
As equipment manager for the past
year and a half, I have improved many skills I think would be beneficial
in a clinic, the most important of which is time management. I
currently work about fifteen to twenty hours a week, not including
weekends. On weekends, I'm usually traveling with the team, or setting
up and taking down equipment for home meets. I have learned to
prioritize and work efficiently because there are many times when five
coaches each want different duties completed at the same time.
Besides working with the LSU track
team, I have coached middle school track and soccer, worked at an
after-school care program and a summer camp. These jobs enabled me to
work hands-on with children, but also required me to interact with their
parents.
Aside from work, I am a diligent
student as well. During my first two years at LSU, I was in the Honors
College. I have also been on the Chancellor's List and Dean's List, and
am in two active honors organizations and currently have a 3.5 GPA.
Please call me with any questions or
to set up an interview at (225) 555-5555. I look forward to hearing from
you.
Sincerely,
Linda Blair

Subject: Job Description
I am applying for a volunteer position this summer
at Baton Rouge Physical Therapy. I heard about this opening from a
current volunteer. Physical therapy volunteers usually have at least a
high-school diploma, are typically outgoing and willing to help others
in need. Typical duties include sterilization of work area, filing
paperwork and assisting patients in movement around the clinic.
I am hoping to go to physical therapy school upon
graduation in May 2005, and have yet to volunteer at any clinic.
Hopefully, I will volunteer full-time at this clinic throughout the
summer and continue to work sporadically during the school year. |
