DESCRIPTION
- Health information managers (HIMS) work with administrative and
clinical staffs in health care facilities to provide the best
possible information resources, a necessity for quality health care.
HIMs design and maintain health information systems to collect,
assess, and disseminate clinical and administrative data. These data
are utilized by health care professionals in education, research,
utilization management, quality assessment and improvement, and
decision making. Health services administrators utilize the data in
financial management, facilities planning, and operational and risk
management. HIMs may find employment in various types of facilities,
including hospitals, managed care organizations, ambulatory care
centers, insurance companies, local and state governmental agencies,
research and education centers, and long-term care facilities.
The baccalaureate certificate program allows the student who already
holds the bachelor's (or higher) degree from an accredited
institution to enter the HIM program without taking basic core
curriculum courses. Certificate students are eligible to take the
HIM professional courses and to apply to write the national
certification exam.
SPECIAL ENROLLMENT ISSUES
- The program requires four hours (two separate two-hour courses)
of Clinical/Seminar. It also requires a six-hour internship.
TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Personal computer with Internet access; web browser (Microsoft
Explorer recommended); RealPlayer (can be downloaded at no cost);
Adobe Acrobat (can be downloaded at no cost).
ACCESS TO LEARNING RESOURCES
- Resources will be available on the program's web site OR on
reserve at the Learning Resources Center. For local students,
computers may be used at the Learning Resources Center, Lister Hill
Library, and the Health Information Management computer lab. The
Lister Hill Library for the Health Sciences is accessible through
the Internet. The UAB Bookstore also is accessible through the
Internet.
ACCESS TO FINANCIAL AID RESOURCES
- Students may apply for financial aid if they need assistance in
paying for the cost of attendance. Students applying for financial
aid are considered for all programs for which they are eligible.
Students enrolling on less than a full-time basis will only be
considered for reduced aid. Those enrolling on less than a half-time
basis may not be eligible for aid. For more information on available
