DESCRIPTION
- The EDP was established in 1987 to meet the needs of adult
students who are unable to attend regularly scheduled classes. All
courses are available by learning contracts, which are independent
study packages that parallel the objectives of TSUM's resident
courses. Students may take from five weeks to six months to complete
a learning contract. Learning contract materials may be accessed
from the University's web page or by requesting that they be sent
through the U.S. Mail. Students may interact with faculty by email,
phone, or fax. Some courses are available as online classes that
follow the University's academic calendar. For students who live
within driving distance of Montgomery, courses on campus and courses
delivered by cable television or Alabama Public Television may be
applied to the degree. Students must complete a minimum of 30
semester hours under TSUM sponsorship. Sponsorship includes TSUM
resident, online, television courses and learning contracts as well
as credits earned through CLEP, REGENTS, DANTES testing, and
portfolio development after admission to the EDP. A minimum of 9
semester hours toward the academic concentration must be completed
under TSUM sponsorship. A minimum total of 120 semester hours are
required for the baccalaureate degree.
SPECIAL ENROLLMENT ISSUES
- Academic concentrations for the baccalaureate degree include
resources management (business), English, history, political
science, psychology, and social science.
If because of your location it is impractical for you to come to
TSUM to take exams, then you must identify someone in your local
area who will act as our testing agent or proctor. The individual
that you identify must fall into one of the following categories:
(1) the testing officer at a local college or university, (2) the
education services officer at a military base/post, or (3) a
counselor at a local high school. When you have identified this
individual, please forward his/her name and telephone number to the
External Degree Program Office by emailing edp@tsum.edu.
TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Internet access is required for online courses and to access
learning contract materials from the World Wide Web. Learning
contract materials also can be mailed.
ACCESS TO LEARNING RESOURCES
- Students may contact librarians by phone (334) 241-9576 or by
email . Books from the TSUM library, libraries
within the TSU System, and interlibrary loan will be mailed to
students. Journal articles will be faxed.
The online public access catalog can be accessed by clicking on
"library" from the TSUM Web page. Students will have remote access
to the online databases, including Britannica Online and Expanded
Academic Index, which provide full text articles from 570 of the
1,580 journals indexed.
TSUM library staff are available to serve as a liaison for students
who wish to use special purpose libraries. Students are provided
with a list of libraries in their geographic areas for supplemental
