DESCRIPTION
- The science of psychology focuses on the study of individuals,
including their behaviors, thought processes, and emotions. Students
who are planning to work in the mental health field, or who are
preparing for graduate study, will find that there is no better way
to prepare for the challenges ahead than the psychology major. By
offering a solid knowledge base in psychology, the major emphasizes
scientific research and its application.
Students also have the opportunity to carry out their own research
projects and to assist with research projects spearheaded by
professors. In recent years, a number of psychology undergraduate
students have coauthored journal articles with their professors. The
psychology curriculum allows students to tailor portions of the
curriculum to meet their individual career goals. With the help of
academic advisors, students select the classes that will best
prepare them for their chosen specialty or for graduate study.
Psychology provides an excellent background for many different
fields because it fosters the problem solving, writing and speaking
skills that employers seek. Not only will the curriculum enhance
marketability, it will expand the ideas about the kinds of careers
available to psychology graduates.

ACCESS TO LEARNING RESOURCES

resources normally available to on-campus students. The university抯
Distance Library Services (DLS) are accessible from a web site that
provides online students with the ability to conduct index and
catalog searches, request books, journal articles, and other
documents using online forms, and to contact a reference librarian.
Students may also communicate with the DLS office using email,
telephone, and fax. The NSU Library system provides access to over
10 million volumes, 200 online databases, and 28,000 full-text
journals. All materials mailed by the library are sent by
first-class mail. When books are borrowed, the student has to pay a
small charge for third-class postage to return them. Books are
loaned for one month. Periodical copies or ERIC documents need not
be returned.
Barnes & Noble College Bookstores, as the university's official
bookstore, offers comprehensive bookstore services to our local and
online students and carries textbooks for all the university抯
courses. While students have the option to purchase textbooks from
other online and local sources, there are benefits from purchasing
from the university's bookstore (on-campus or online), including
better availability. The university's bookstore provides the
full-spectrum of shipping options. The school insures that required
textbooks are available, and then posts them on its website at least
one month prior to the start of each term. Students should place
their orders early enough to ensure delivery prior to the start of
the term.
ACCESS TO FINANCIAL AID RESOURCES
- The Office of Student Financial Assistance administers the
university抯 financial aid programs of grants, loans, scholarships,
and student employment and provides professional financial advisers
to help students plan for the most efficient use of their financial
resources for education. In order to participate in financial aid
programs, a student must be admitted into a university program and
must be a citizen, a national, or a permanent resident of the United
States, or be in the United States for other than a temporary
purpose.
A prospective student who requires financial assistance must apply
for financial aid while he or she is a candidate for admission.
Students/applicants may apply for financial aid online. For
additional information or application forms call 800-806-3680 or
954-262-3380. To continue financial aid, at a minimum, enrolled
students must demonstrate satisfactory academic progress toward a
stated educational objective in accordance with the university抯
policy on satisfactory progress for financial aid recipients.
SPECIAL PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
- Before the first semester of enrollment, students are expected
to demonstrate skills necessary for college-level work. Students
without appropriate SAT/ACT scores or prerequisites for
college-level math and/or English will be placed in fundamental
courses. Students also have the opportunity prior to their first
registration to complete a challenge exam in reading, writing, and
mathematics. Based on their scores, they will be advised on
appropriate course selection.

ACCESS TO ADVISING/MENTORING SERVICES
- The primary purpose of academic advising is to ensure that
students receive the individual attention needed to succeed
academically. Students should maintain regular contact with their
academic adviser throughout their academic career at NSU.
Academic advisers serve as learning resources and provide students
with confidential academic, social, and developmental advising. They
serve as liaisons and referral agents by helping students gain
needed assistance from other NSU divisions or from the community. On
the main campus, advisers are available in each academic division
for student questions and concerns. At the university抯 off-campus
Student Educational Centers, academic program managers (APMs) are
available to work with students on advising and other issues.
The interaction between student and adviser is at the heart of the
advising process. This process must assure students that they are
receiving optimal guidance for a high-quality educational
experience. Therefore, students are encouraged to consult with an
adviser when they believe their rights as students are being, or
have been, violated. Students are also encouraged to discuss aspects
of their education with faculty members, program administrators, and
directors.
SPECIAL TRANSFER POLICIES
- NSU will transfer a maximum of 90 eligible semester credit
(grades of C or better), including credit for CLEP, proficiency
exams, and prior experiental learning, toward a degree. A limited
number of D grades may be considered, depending on the total number
of credit being transferred and where the D grades are being applied
to the curriculum.
Nova Southeastern University has articulation agreements with
Florida's community colleges. For financial aid purposes, students
who have earned associate of arts degrees (1993 or later) at one of
these colleges will enter NSU with junior standing.
