DESCRIPTION
- The Bachelor of Health Science (B.H.Sc.) program is an online
degree advancement program for graduates from Associate Degree,
Diploma or Certificate programs in the health sciences such as
military trained health care technicians, radiology technicians,
respiratory therapists, etc. The NSU B.H.Sc. course of study is
interdisciplinary and is designed to provide career advancement
for health care practitioners as well as deliver a well-rounded
generalist curriculum. This cutting edge program offers the
opportunity for numerous health care occupations to complete their
undergraduate degree course work online, conveniently from their own
home or office, without compromising career or other obligations
There have been dramatic changes in the health care market and
delivery systems in the United States over the past decade. As
health care becomes increasingly competitive, it becomes more
important to distinguish one self professionally and academically.
The online Bachelor in Health Science Program is offered via NSU
College of Allied Health and Nursing's State-of-the-art,
web-based distance learning technology that allows health care
professionals to remain in their current location and employment.
Upon successful completion of the B.H.Sc. program, students are
eligible to apply for admission in order to continue their education
in health sciences in the Master of Medical Science (M.M.S.)
and later the Doctor of Health Science (D.H.Sc.). Each of these
programs is an on-line degree program, with the M.M.S. having no
residency requirement and the D.H.Sc. having a requirement for
students to complete two one-week summer institutes.

ACCESS TO LEARNING RESOURCES
- Distance education students in the B.H.Sc. Program are provided
with NSU computer accounts including e-mail. The student, however,
must obtain their own Internet Service Providers (ISP)and use their
own computer systems (IBM-compatible PC or Apple Macintosh, and a
modem).
New students receive an orientation and extensive online technical
support online access, online tools and methods, and library
resources. Online interactive learning methods involve Web pages to
access course materials, announcements, the electronic library, and
other information, plus a range of online activities that facilitate
frequent student-professor interaction. Faculty members and students
interact via online forums using threaded bulletin boards, chat
rooms, and email. Students are able to submit assignments as e-mail
attachments, through the use of online forms sent directly to
program
instructors, fax to fax, fax to e-mail, and through WebCT. Some
online courses may include electronic classroom sessions.
Online students have online access to books, journal articles,
microfiche, dissertations, index searches, catalog searches, and
reference librarians. The online medical database collection at
NSU is extensive and includes access to quality subscription
services free of charge to the student.
ACCESS TO FINANCIAL AID RESOURCES
- The Office of Student Financial Assistance administers the
university抯 financial aid programs of grants, loans, scholarships,
and student employment and provides professional financial advisers
to help students plan for the most efficient use of their financial
resources for education. In order to participate in financial aid
programs, a student must be admitted into a university program and
must be a citizen, a national, or a permanent resident of the United
States, or be in the United States for other than a temporary
purpose. A prospective student who requires financial assistance
must apply for financial aid while he or she is a candidate for
admission. Students/applicants may apply for financial aid online.

students must demonstrate satisfactory academic progress toward a
stated educational objective in accordance with the university抯
policy on satisfactory progress for financial aid recipients. Any
student admitted provisionally is not eligible for financial aid.
Provisionally admitted students are permitted to register for one
term and must meet requirements for full admission status by the
90th day of the first term of enrollment or further registration
will not be permitted.
SPECIAL PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
- The program requires that a minimum of 30 semester hours of
course work (including 21 semester hours of required core course
work) be completed through the NSU B.H.Sc. program. A minimum total
of 120 semester hours, of which 30 semester hours must fulfill
general education requirements, are required in order to graduate
with the B.H.Sc. degree. The B.H.Sc. program is designed for
completion in a distance-learning format and requires no on-campus
time. The course work is professor-paced using state-of-the-art
web-based delivery. The curriculum and coursework follow a standard
12-week semester calendar. The curriculum is designed to build upon
the existing knowledge base of the health care professional while
focusing on the overall health care picture. Leadership, diversity,
and conflict resolution are but a few of the areas covered in the
curriculum.
SPECIAL GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
- To Be eligible to receive the B.H.Sc. degree, students shall;
1. Satisfactorily complete the program of 30 semester hours
(minimum) of study in the B.H.Sc. major required for the degree.
(not including CLEP, proficiency examinations, experiential learning
credits).
2. Completion of general education, major and elective requirements
as specified by the program at time of admission resulting in a
minimum of total 120 semester hours
3. Attainment of a 2.0 cumulative grade point average.
4. Attainment of a 2.25 grade point average in the major area
5. Submission of a degree application form before completing
registration for the last semester. Fulfillment of all obligations
to the library, the student's program, and the bursar's office.
6. Receive recommendation by B.H.Sc. Program Director to the Dean of
the College of
Allied Health and Nursing.
ACCESS TO ADVISING/MENTORING SERVICES
- Students are provided academic and administrative support by the
Nursing Department抯 Graduate Program Office. The program office
coordinates the scheduling of faculty and courses, provides
advisement to students, organizes registration, and monitors student
progress. Students may reach the Graduate Program Office through
email or telephone or in person on the Fifth floor of the Terry
Building on the main NSU campus.
