DESCRIPTION
- It is not unusual for professionals in Adult Education and Human
Resource Development to have earned graduate degrees in other areas,
such as teaching, business and nursing. The education specialist's
degree in Human Resource Development (HRD) is a post-master's degree
program for experienced professionals who currently hold a graduate
degree in a particular professional area but are seeking advanced
competence in the management, design, delivery and evaluation of
training. The EdS is not intended to constitute a second master's
degree. Rather it is designed to offer practicing professionals an
advanced degree option that conveys a broader understanding of
technical, evaluation, and research issues affecting adult and
organizational learning, perfects their skills in human resource
planning and policy-making and upgrades their capacity to evaluate
HRD programs and to determine learning and performance outcomes. In
this program, learning and development are treated as an integral
part of the larger human resource management function.
SPECIAL ENROLLMENT ISSUES
- Although full-time students will be accommodated, the EdS
program is structured to assist the part-time student who takes no
more than two classes per semester and generally requires two years
to complete the course requirements.

To be successful in your online class, you must have:
Regular access to a computer
An Internet connection (ISP or Internet Service Provider)

An FSU/ACNS computer account, which includes your login/username,
password, and email account

If you plan to use computer equipment that you do not own for
participation in the program, be certain that you have permission to
use the equipment for course work purposes. You must also be sure
that you have permission to save data to the local hard drive.
ACCESS TO LEARNING RESOURCES
- Online students at FSU can find support for every aspect of the
University experience. Your computer and an Internet connection link
you to the most comprehensive electronic campus in higher education.

enrolled students who are located 50 miles or more from Tallahassee
can request materials to be sent to them. Some of your online
courses may require you to purchase a Course Packet, which could
include a study guide, textbooks, and/or media (video, audiotapes,
CD-ROMs). Information about what, if any, course materials are
required for your courses can be found through: Campus bookstores
(FSU Bookstore and Bill抯 Bookstore), Departmental web sites, Course
instructors, Academic Coordinators. Course materials can be ordered
online and will be shipped directly to you. (You pay the cost of the
course materials, plus shipping. The FSU bookstore can be reached at
1-800-255-3781. A mentor or teaching assistant is available online
(and often by phone) to help clarify course materials and refer you
to resources for all other aspects of the university experience.

ACCESS TO FINANCIAL AID RESOURCES
- Distance students enrolled in at least 6 semester hours have
access to many of the same types of financial aid as residential
students. If you need financial aid to help defray the costs of your

SPECIAL PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
- Students completing the Educational Specialist degree are
required to complete thirty semester hours of relevant coursework
and complete a six semester hour action learning project or thesis.
SPECIAL GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
- Students are expected to complete a comprehensive examination
near the end of his or her coursework.
ACCESS TO ADVISING/MENTORING SERVICES
- Although the course materials you will use are designed for
self-directed learning and the professor of the course will also be
interacting with students on a regular basis, you may need or want
additional help as you progress through a course. To support your
progress and help you feel like a member of a learning community,
most of the courses have a graduate student teaching assistant to
provide that additional assistance. You will be able to communicate
with the teaching assistant via threaded discussions, e-mail, phone,
or fax. FSU抯 course management system also provides for extensive
student-to-student communication via chat and group web-sites to
help students develop and participate in a learning community.
