DESCRIPTION
- This program is a thirty-three hour program intended for
applicants with at least 3 years of MIS-related work experience.
Please note that certain prerequisite knowledge is assumed prior to
admission. The program is designed so that a typical student can
complete the degree in 24 months by taking two online courses each
semester. There are two ways to complete the onine MS in MIS
program. Students preferring a technical orientation take 3 advanced
MIS courses in the areas of systems analysis, database, and
telecommunications. Students should not choose the technical track
if they lack fundamental skills in systems analysis, database, and
telecommunications. Students preferring a managerial orientation
take 4 courses offered in the management concentration.
SPECIAL ENROLLMENT ISSUES
- PREREQUISITES: All applicants must have at least 3 years of
IT-related work experenced and will be expected to have the
following prerequisite knowledge or skills:
1) Working knowledge of at least 2 programming languages such as C,
C++, Java, Visual Basic, etc.
2) Proficiency in at least one programming language at a level
comparable to an entry-level professional programmer in that
language.
3) Knowledge of basic statistical concepts (descriptive statistics,
regression and hypothesis testing.)
TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
- To participate in FSU's online programs, you need access to
certain technologies. To minimize technical problems you may
experience, FSU provides online technical support.
To be successful in your online class, you must have:
Regular access to a computer
An Internet connection (ISP or Internet Service Provider)
An Internet browser
An FSU/ACNS computer account, which includes your login/username,
password, and email account

If you plan to use computer equipment that you do not own for
participation in the program, be certain that you have permission to
use the equipment for course work purposes. You must also be sure
that you have permission to save data to the local hard drive.
ACCESS TO LEARNING RESOURCES
- Online students at FSU can find support for every aspect of the
University experience. Your computer and an Internet connection link
you to the most comprehensive electronic campus in higher education.
The FSU library may be reached at: 850-644-2706. Currently enrolled
students who are located 50 miles or more from Tallahassee can
request materials to be sent to them. Some of your online courses
may require you to purchase a Course Packet, which could include a
study guide, textbooks, and/or media (video, audiotapes, CD-ROMs).
Information about what, if any, course materials are required for
your courses can be found through: Campus bookstores (FSU Bookstore
and Bill抯 Bookstore), Departmental web sites, Course instructors,
Academic Coordinators. Course materials can be ordered online and
will be shipped directly to you. (You pay the cost of the course
materials, plus shipping. The FSU bookstore can be reached at
1-800-255-3781. A mentor or teaching assistant is available online
(and often by phone) to help clarify course materials and refer you
to resources for all other aspects of the university experience.

ACCESS TO FINANCIAL AID RESOURCES
- Distance students enrolled in at least 6 semester hours have
access to many of the same types of financial aid as residential
students. If you need financial aid to help defray the costs of your
education, begin to investigate the aid you may be eligible for as

IT-related work experience.
All MS in MIS students will be expected to have the following
prerequisite knowledge or skills:
* Working knowledge of at least two programming languages such as C,
C++, Java, Visual Basic, etc. (Working knowledge is defined as
familiarity with the language syntax and the basic construction of
programs in the language; i.e., how branching and looping algorithms
would be implemented and how modular or component-oriented
construction would be accomplished in the language.)
* Proficiency in at least one programming language at a level
comparable to an entry-level professional programmer in that
language (Proficiency is defined as a working knowledge of the
language [see above] plus knowledge of passing arguments or
parameters to remote procedures, components, objects or applets, as
appropriate for the environment. Proficiency in a language that does
not have these characteristics does not satisfy this requirement.)
* Knowledge of basic statistical concepts (descriptive statistics,
regression and hypothesis testing)
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
- Master's programs admission policy assures that incoming classes
will be comprised of highly qualified individuals representing a
diversity of backgrounds in terms of undergraduate institutions,
work experience, and accomplishments. The Admissions Committee will
carefully examine the applicant's admissibility based on a
combination of the following criteria:
1) Undergraduate academic record, to include grades and the trend
and direction of grade performance.
2) Both verbal and quantitative scores on the GMAT, as well as the
total score
Recommendations which speak specifically to your ability to
successfully complete the MIS master's program and an accurate
assessment of executive and leadership potential
3) Management, business, and leadership experience as detailed in an
up-to-date resume, clearly highlighting work experience
4) An application statement of educational and career objectives
All admission decisions will be made by June 15 and applicants will
be notified by mail.
