DESCRIPTION
- The Master of Science in Emotional Handicaps/Learning
Disabilities program (soon to be renamed either "Special Education"
or "Education of Students with Exceptionalities") is designed for
practicing teachers who wish to expand and/or update their knowledge
of special education and/or to increase their ability to teach
learners who experience disabilities. This degree program is
appropriate for individuals with degrees or teacher certification in
special education, early childhood education, elementary education,
or middle or high school education.
SPECIAL ENROLLMENT ISSUES
- The program is a minimum of 33 semester hours and provides for
specialization in severe disabilities (autism and severe cognitive
disability), early childhood special education (birth through age 5
years), and high incidence disabilities. Early childhood special
education courses are designed to meet the state of Florida 's
requirements for the Pre-Kindergarten Disability Endorsement and the
Infant/Toddler Developmental Specialist certification. The severe
disability courses are designed to meet the requirements for Florida
's Endorsement in Autism and Endorsement in Severe or Profound
Disabilities. High incidence disability courses emphasize
instruction in academic areas.
TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
- To participate in FSU's online programs, you need access to
certain technologies. To minimize technical problems you may
experience, FSU provides online technical support.
To be successful in your online class, you must have:
Regular access to a computer
An Internet connection (ISP or Internet Service Provider)
An Internet browser
An FSU/ACNS computer account, which includes your login/username,
password, and email account

If you plan to use computer equipment that you do not own for
participation in the program, be certain that you have permission to
use the equipment for course work purposes. You must also be sure
that you have permission to save data to the local hard drive.
ACCESS TO LEARNING RESOURCES
- Online students at FSU can find support for every aspect of the
University experience. Your computer and an Internet connection link
you to the most comprehensive electronic campus in higher education.
The FSU library may be reached at el: 850-644-2706. Currently
enrolled students who are located 50 miles or more from Tallahassee
can request materials to be sent to them. Some of your online
courses may require you to purchase a Course Packet, which could
include a study guide, textbooks, and/or media (video, audiotapes,
CD-ROMs). Information about what, if any, course materials are
required for your courses can be found through: Campus bookstores (FSU
Bookstore and Bill抯 Bookstore), Departmental web sites, Course
instructors, Academic Coordinators. Course materials can be ordered
online and will be shipped directly to you. (You pay the cost of the
course materials, plus shipping. The FSU bookstore can be reached at
1-800-255-3781. A mentor or teaching assistant is available online
(and often by phone) to help clarify course materials and refer you
to resources for all other aspects of the university experience.

ACCESS TO FINANCIAL AID RESOURCES
- Distance students enrolled in at least 6 semester hours have
access to many of the same types of financial aid as residential
students. If you need financial aid to help defray the costs of your
education, begin to investigate the aid you may be eligible for as

SPECIAL PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
- The program is a minimum of 33 semester hours, with 18 semester
hours of required coursework. For the remaining 15 semester hours,
students may specialize in early childhood special education, high
incidence disabilities, or severe disabilities. All coursework is
available on-line. A minimum of one required course is offered each
fall and spring semesters; and two required courses are offered each
summer. In addition, specialization courses are offered each
semester. Practicing teachers may register for up to six semester
hours fall and spring semesters.
SPECIAL GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
- The last semester of the program, students are required to
complete a culminating activity. During this semester, students
register for EEX 8966: Master's Comprehensive Examination for zero
(0) semester hours. At this time, students will complete an
electronic portfolio organized around three professional goals
established prior to beginning the program.
ACCESS TO ADVISING/MENTORING SERVICES
- Although the course materials you will use are designed for
self-directed learning and the professor of the course will also be
interacting with students on a regular basis, you may need or want
additional help as you progress through a course. To support your
progress and help you feel like a member of a learning community,
most of the courses have a graduate student teaching assistant to
provide that additional assistance. You will be able to communicate
with the teaching assistant via threaded discussions, e-mail, phone,
or fax. FSU抯 course management system also provides for extensive
student-to-student communication via chat and group web-sites to
help students develop and participate in a learning community.

SPECIAL TRANSFER POLICIES
- Students entering the program with graduate hours in special
education can transfer up to six hours subject to the supervisory
committee抯 approval.

- # a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college/university,
# an upper division cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0
(on a 4.0 scale)

portions of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).
