Utah State University
Located in a high mountain valley 80 miles north of Salt Lake
City, Utah State offers a wide variety of opportunities for research
and study. In addition to the 400-acre main campus at Logan, there
are a number of agriculture and engineering research stations spread
throughout the state. The School of Graduate studies offers 37
doctoral and 102 master's programs in engineering, agriculture,
business, education, humanities and arts, natural resources, family
life and science. Programs in forestry, wildlife management,
agriculture, and engineering all have earned good reputations. In
federally financed research and development expenditures, USU ranks
51st in the nation. The Space Dynamics Laboratory is involved with
aerospace research from a number of disciplines. Projects have
included Strategic Defense Initiative research and work with the
Space Shuttle program-indeed, Utah State was the first university to
have an experiment designed by a student carried aboard the shuttle
and has flown more student experiments than any other university.
The Utah Water Research Laboratory conducts a number of experiments
and studies of hydrology, irrigation engineering, soil erosion, and
runs a federally-funded water quality program. Undergraduate
enrollment is 13,000 and there are 2,500 graduate students.
Hispanics account for 1% of the total enrollment, and minorities
account for 3%. There are also 1,200 international students
from 76 countries. A wide range of outdoor activities are found in
the area, and residents enjoy the changes brought by four distinct
seasons. Male and female dormitories, and on-campus single and
