The University of Utah, the major public institution of higher
education in a region stretching from the Rockies to the Sierra
Nevadas, is composed of 15 colleges and schools. Graduate degrees
are offered in architecture, business, education, engineering, fine
arts, health, humanities, law, medicine, mines and earth sciences,
nursing, pharmacy, science, social and behavioral science, and
social work. There are doctoral and master's degree programs in 92
areas. A number of programs unite disciplines and cross departmental
and college lines. A student body of 25,600, of which 4,500 are
graduate students, is joined by a regular faculty of 1,394. Students
represent all 50 states and 90 countries. Minorities make up 20% and
Hispanics 2% of the total population. The university ranks among
the nation's top schools in government and privately funded
research. Among the nearly 50 research centers, laboratories and
institutes affiliated with the university are Biomedical
Engineering, Advanced Combustion Engineering, Engineering Design,
Advanced Pyrometallurgical Technology, Advanced Coal Technology, the
Utah Supercomputing Institute and the John A. Dixon Laser Institute.
The university's 1,425-acre campus, located in the foothills of the
Wasatch Mountains, allows unparalleled options for recreation
ranging from skiing at some of the nation's premier resorts to some
of the most spectacular and varied parkland at Bryce, Zion, Arches,
Canyonlands and other state and national parks. University-owned
