The University of Texas at Austin is a major research institution
founded in 1883 and currently occupying 300 acres with over 110
buildings. It is one of the only three Southwestern members of the
Association of American Universities and offers graduate programs
that rate highly in a number of fields. In an assessment of doctoral
programs by The Conference Board of Associate Research Centers,
three UT Austin programs-botany, linguistics and Spanish-received
scores ranking them in the top five in the U.S. and five additional
programs- Germanic languages, civil engineering, classics, zoology,
and computer sciences, ranked in the top ten.
UT Austin has produced more than half of the world's Ph.D.'s in
petroleum engineering, and the College of Education has graduate
more community college presidents and deans than any other
university in the nation.
Master's degrees are available in over 90 fields and doctoral
degrees in over 70.
Computer resources are abundant at UT Austin. The university is
ranked number 1 in the nation among 107 institutions cited for the
use of computers in teaching and learning. Among the facilities
available is the University of Texas System Center for High
Performance Computing, which serves both research and instructional
supercomputing needs for all of the UT system.
Additional research centers include the MacDonald Observatory for
Astronomy, the Marine Science Institute (http://wwwutmsi.zo.utexas.edu),
the Population Research Center, and the Council for Advanced
Transportation Research.
There are around 34,900 undergraduate and 10,977 graduate
students, of which 29% are minority and 11% Hispanic. Single-sex and
coed residence halls are available, as is off-campus married
