Rice University is a small, private university dedicated to teaching
and research in science, engineering, the arts, humanities, and
social sciences. Rice offers its students the best of two worlds:
the personal atmosphere of a small liberal arts college and the
distinction of a true research university.
Despite its small size, Rice rated in the top ten private
universities in the nation in endowment, and in the top four when
measured by endowment per student. The university was also ranked in
the top 25 universities in the nation by U.S. News and World Report
in 1991. Due to its high standards and low tuition compared to other
universities of similar quality, Rice is consistently rated one of
the "best buys" in education.
Rice offers graduate coursework in architecture, engineering,
humanities, music, natural sciences, and social sciences. Research
centers include the Institute for Bioscience and Bioengineering, the
Rice Quantum Institute, the Rice Institute for Policy Analysis, and
the federally-funded Center for Research on Parallel Computation,
which links Rice to three other universities and two national
laboratories.Rice has patterned itself as a residential college in
the tradition of British colleges. This atmosphere makes each of the
eight colleges the center for student's social, dining, intramural
and theater life. Faculty interact with the colleges by attending
dinners and providing academic and personal counseling. With this
environment, 70% of the students choose to live in the coed
residential colleges.
There are 2,794 undergraduate and 1,322 graduate students at
Rice. Of these, 14% were minority and 4% Hispanic.
