Duke University is located on thousands of acres of land, including
7,000 acres of pine forest, in the Piedmont section of North
Carolina. Fifty-seven year-old Duke Chapel is the centerpiece of the
Gothic West Campus. Duke's East Campus, the original campus before
expansion in the 1920's, was built and refurnished in the Georgian
architectural style.One of Duke's unique strengths is in the way it
combines the academic facilities of a major research university with
the size and atmosphere of a liberal arts institution.
Duke enrolls approximately 6,000 undergraduates and 4,400
graduate and professional students. Total minority population is
12.5%, and Hispanics account for 3%.
Duke's graduate schools in business administration, divinity,
engineering, law, the environment, and medicine rank at or near the
top of their fields. English graduate and undergraduate programs at
Duke thrive, as do the performing arts and student philanthropic
activities in the community.
The university's science and research facilities include the
Marine Laboratory, the Primate Center (the world's only
university-based facility devoted to the study of prosimian
primates), the Engineering Research Center for Emerging
Cardiovascular Technologies, the Free Electron Laser Laboratory, and
the Phytotron. Plans are underway for a multimillion dollar Science
Research Center.
US News and the World Report placed Duke seventh in the nation in
its ranking of American universities. The university offers a full
range of housing options including male, female and coed
dormitories, college apartments, and on-campus family housing.
