New Mexico State University is deeply rooted in the tricultural
tradition of the Southwest. Situated at the gateway to Mexico, the
university's 6,250-acre campus is among the largest in the world.
Six undergraduate colleges offer 86 areas of study, while the
Graduate School offers 48 areas of study on the master's level, 4 on
the Specialist in Education level, and 245 on the doctoral level.
The university has one of only three full-time planetary
observatories in the nation, as well as one of the largest computer
centers in the Southwest. New Mexico State ranks in the top two
percent of institutions in the nation for providing personal
computers for students. It is ranked by the Carnegie Foundation as a
level one research institution with research contracts totaling over
$300 million. New Mexico State is the only member of the Hispanic
Association of Colleges and Universities with a Carnegie
designation.
Specialized research facilities include the Agricultural Research
Station, the Arts & Sciences Research Center, the Astrophysics
Research Consortium, the Border Research Institute, the Center for
Latin American Studies, the Consortium for International
Development, and the New Mexico Water Resources Research Institute.
The Plant Genetic Engineering Laboratory for Desert Adaptation is
conducting high-technology research designed to improve crop and
agricultural opportunities. The New Mexico Regional Primate Research
Laboratory maintains the largest captive colony of chimpanzees in
the world and conducts research in toxicology, metabolism,
pharmacology, pathology, reproduction, breeding, virology, and
immunology.
Minorities account for 35% of the population, with Hispanics
making up 28% of the total. Coed and female residence halls,
on-campus married apartment and other housing options are available.
