The University of Kansas opened its doors to its first students in
1866 and progressed rapidly to full undergraduate and beginning
undergraduate level work. In 1896, KU organized its Graduate School
and awarded its first doctorate degree, a Ph.D. in mathematics.
Since 1908-09, the university has been a member of the prestigious
Association of American Universities. This is indicative of its
position and record as a regional leader and national contributor in
graduate, and particularly doctoral, education.
The Graduate School offers the Master of Arts degrees in 42
fields, the Master of Science in 35, and specific professional
master's degrees in 12 programs. KU offers the professional degree
of Specialist in Education; and the Doctorate of Philosophy degree
in 56 fields, as well as professional doctorates of education,
engineering, and musical arts. The KU School of Law offers the juris
doctor degree.
Top ranked medical education is offered through the KU Medical
Center in nearby Kansas City, Kansas. There, about 2,500 students
are enrolled in pursuit of degrees in various health care fields.
Other notable facilities include the space technology center and the
laser laboratory. KU's libraries are consistently ranked in the top
22 of U.S. public university libraries by the Association of
Research Libraries. Total volumes owned are almost 3 million.
About 7,200 graduate students are enrolled at KU, with about 36%
being members of minority groups. The undergraduate population is
17,000.Male, female, and coed residence halls are available, as are
college owned/operated apartments and on and off-campus family
