Founded in 1881, the University of Connecticut has granted master's
and doctoral degrees since 1941. Designated a Research 1 University
by the Carnegie Foundation, UConn places strong emphasis on research
and scholarship in a broad spectrum of academic fields.
University of Connecticut offers 83 fields of study, 65 of which
are at the Ph.D. level. The programs run from the arts, humanities
and social sciences, to the physical and life sciences, business,
law public affairs, public health and social work.
The 3,000-seat Homer Babbidge Library has a holding of 2.3
million volumes. The university has a wide range of facilities,
including centers and institutes. Among these are: the Institute of
Materials Science; the Institute of Cellular and Molecular Biology;
the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies; the Institute
of Social Inquiry (which includes the Roper Center for Public
Opinion Survey Research, the largest public opinion data archive in
the world); and the National Undersea Research Center.
The university has stated its commitment to enhancing cultural
diversity at all student, faculty and staff levels. Among its 18,000
undergraduate and 6,800 graduate students, 10% are minority and 2%
Hispanic.Male, female and coed dormitories are available, as is
