University of Alaska, Fairbanks
Equidistant from major economic centers of Europe, North America,
and the Pacific Rim, Fairbanks is Alaska's second largest city. The
University of Alaska Fairbanks is the state's land, sea and space
grant institution and the only university in Alaska offering classes
at the Ph.D. level.
UAF is known internationally for its high latitude social and
scientific studies. Cold regions issues are emphasized by research
in arctic biology and ecology, geophysics, and space physics,
wildlife, fisheries and ocean sciences, northern engineering, Native
languages, cross-cultural studies, agriculture, forestry and
petroleum development.
UAF research sites include Poker Flat Research Range, the only
university-owned rocket range in the work, the Large Animal Research
Station and the Fishery Industrial Technology Center.
Master's degrees are offered in more than 40 fields and doctoral
programs in more than a dozen. Interdisciplinary programs are
possible in areas where UAF has faculty expertise and research
facilities, such as northern studies, atmospheric chemistry, and
quatemary science.
UAF's main campus undergraduate enrollment is about 6,500. About
55% of student enrollment are women, 45% men. Minority enrollment is
roughly 30%, with 14% Alaska Natives, 6% other minorities, 2%
International students, and 1% of the unreported ethnic origin.
Hispanics enrollment is approximately 2%.
On-campus housing is available for both married and unmarried
