Preparing for a Career in Nursing
There are many levels of nursing careers. You may choose an
associate degree program, or a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing
(BSN) (either one of these degrees will allow you to sit for the
board exam to become a registered nurse (RN). The trend is away from
the first and toward the latter. A BSN is usually required for
working in any community health agency or to move up in a hospital
nursing hierarchy. BSN degrees are usually not required for staff
nurse positions in a hospital or clinic setting.
If you wish to specialize in a particular area of nursing (e.g.,
nurse practitioner, nurse midwife, or nurse education), you will
need to obtain a Master's degree beyond the BSN degree. These
degrees are offered in programs at the University of Colorado, the
University of Northern Colorado, Regis University, and Bethel (a
private school in Colorado Springs). BSN programs are also offered
by these institutions. Colorado University also offers a Ph.D. in
nursing, and a nursing doctorate (N.D.)
Although Fort Lewis College does not offer a pre-nursing program,
many of the courses required for a BSN can be taken here. There is
some variation in what the different schools look at for transfer
credits, and transfer hours are approved by the school you transfer
to, not by Fort Lewis. Below you will find specific information
about courses required at the University of Colorado, the University
of Northern Colorado, and the University of Southern Colorado, as
well as addresses and phone numbers for these institutions.
The University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, School of
Nursing, will accept transfer students from Fort Lewis who have
completed 60 credits minimum and have taken the following courses
(and their prerequisites):

The University of Northern Colorado accepts transfer students into
their BSN program if students have completed the following

A Research Paper
UNC will decide ultimately on what they will accept for transfer
credit. They base their admissions primarily on GPA (minimum GPA for
acceptance in 1993 was 3.55) but also consider rural background,
ethnic background, reference letters, and a personal essay.

Fort Lewis College has a transfer agreement with the nursing program
at the University of Southern Colorado. In 1993, USC had 150
applicants and accepted 38 for their BSN program. They only look at
GPA, and the minimum GPA for acceptance in 1993 was 3.20. Absolute
prerequisites for admission to the USC program are:
8 hours of chemistry with lab
4 hours of organic/biochemistry with lab
8 hours of anatomy and physiology lab
Microbiology and lab
General Psychology
Human Development
FCS
High School Algebra
Statistics
A "multicultural class" (like our non-western classes)
