Preparing for a Career in Allied Health Professions
Chiropractic Medicine
Chiropractic medicine involves neither drugs nor surgery. It is
concerned with the whole body, based on a properly functioning
nervous system. Chiropractics focus on health, not disease, and are
concerned with the entire problem of the patient, which may include
stress, rest, exercise and nutrition. Referrals may be made to other
health care professionals if chiropractic is not the appropriate
method of treatment. Candidates for admission must have at least 60
semester hours leading to a baccalaureate degree and at least a 2.5
GPA, but most entrants possess a bachelor's degree. For more
detailed information about appropriate coursework, consult the file
in Room 711BH.
Medical Technology
Medical technology is the branch of medicine which deals with
laboratory tests, procedures, and the use of clinical laboratory
equipment.
Medical laboratory personnel are certified by the American Medical
Technologists (AMT) which recognizes two levels of expertise--the
Medical Lab Technician (MLT) and the Medical Technologist (MT). A
Medical Laboratory Technician has at least two years of approved
college courses with at least twenty-five hours in the sciences
including twelve hours of chemistry, three hours of mathematics,
eight hours of biology, genetics, embryology, zoology, anatomy
and/or physiology. Medical Laboratory Technicians perform clinical
laboratory testing which requires a limited exercise of independent
judgment and discretion. A technician ordinarily works only under
immediate supervision, particularly when performing tests that are
not of a routine nature.
An MT must have a bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or a
bachelor's degree with a major in biology, chemistry, or the
physical sciences and a minimum of one year of approved laboratory
experience.
Medical Technology is an expanding field with government estimates
of openings for medical laboratory workers averaging about $14,500
annually in the 1980's. Starting salaries may be as high as $15,000
per year. If you would like additional information write:
