Community Outreach Coordinator-Animal Health
Salary: $23.45-$28.62 hourly / $4,078-$4,978 monthly / Range:
5658
DEFINITION: Under general direction, coordinates the volunteer
program and community outreach efforts of the Animal Health and
Regulation division of the Public Health Department; and performs
other duties as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This is a single position
classification in the Animal Health and Regulation division of the
Public Health Department. It is distinguished from an Animal Control
Officer, Supervising by its responsibility for coordinating the
countywide volunteer and outreach programs for Animal Health &
Regulation.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
1. Recruits, interviews, orients, evaluates, places, and schedules
prospective volunteers; coordinates volunteer service to help
achieve the mission of the department; trains volunteers on their
roles and responsibilities in relation to the shelter and other
County employees.
2. Confers regularly with staff, volunteer groups, and individuals
regarding utilization, training, retention, and evaluation of
volunteers; assists in the coordination of public education and
prevention programs, including public schools, community groups and
the annual rabies clinic; conducts public school education and
community group presentations; explains animal control policies and
procedures and the role of the Animal Health and Regulation program
to the public.
3. Develops and maintains volunteer manuals; provides input on
policies and procedures throughout the department; coordinates with
staff to meet departmental needs and promote redemptions and
adoptions; oversees Animal Health & Regulation's foster care program
and ensures accurate record keeping and tracking of animals in
foster homes.
4. Coordinates community service workers, student programs, and the
general relief programs; plans and executes volunteer activities,
recognition, and adoption events; assists with special events
throughout the department.
5. Maintains records, correspondence and statistics regarding the
volunteer program; responds, over the phone and in writing, to
requests for information from the community regarding specific
volunteer questions or inquires about court-ordered or school
community service work.
6. Writes and submits reports regarding current and proposed
volunteer programs, incident or disciplinary reports, and
recommendations for proposed outreach activities and programs.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
1. Two years of experience in animal welfare or animal control work
at an animal shelter or veterinary hospital; or,
2. one year of experience performing duties equivalent to the class
of Animal Control Officer II with Santa Barbara County; or,
3. a combination of training, education, and experience that is
equivalent to one of the employment standards listed above and that
provides the required knowledge and abilities.
Additional Qualifications: Possession of a valid California Class C
Driver's License. Incumbents may be required to work outside of
normal business hours and/or work an irregular schedule as required.
Knowledge of: animal handling techniques; behavior patterns of small
domestic animals; proper procedures for the care and maintenance of
animals housed in an animal shelter; common diseases and injuries in
dogs, cats, and rabbits; breed identification; basic arithmetic; use
of standard office automation software; proper English usage,
grammar, and spelling; report, correspondence, and procedure writing
techniques; training techniques; euthanasia methods and techniques;
conflict resolution techniques.
Ability to: plan, schedule, and direct the work of volunteers; train
and evaluate volunteers; communicate both verbally and in writing;
explain, apply, and enforce rules and regulations; prepare various
reports using proper English grammar; obtain cooperation and
compliance from members of the public; exercise tact and independent
judgment; present a positive public image; establish and maintain
effective relationships with the public, volunteers, and staff;
handle animals in a safe and humane manner; recognize diseased or
injured animals; make mathematical computations; speak before large
and small groups; tolerate stress; safely drive a vehicle; collect
and evaluate data, draw conclusions, and make recommendations; and
work independently.
Desirable Qualifications: Supervisory experience or experience
leading the work of others. |
