Chief Trial Deputy
Salary: N/A
DEFINITION: Under general direction, to supervise and participate
in the functions of the Criminal Division of the Office of the
District Attorney; and to do related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This class is under the immediate
direction of the Assistant District Attorney, but has supervisory
responsibility for the Criminal Division, which includes the felony,
misdemeanor and juvenile sections. The position at this level is
characterized by demonstrated extensive felony trial experience, by
direction and coordination of felony and misdemeanor filings and
case assignments, by professional supervisorial duties and by
administrative direction of a major organizational division of the
department.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Handles difficult and/or complex criminal cases;
organizes, supervises and participates in criminal substantive
functions; confers with Assistant District Attorney, law enforcement
agencies, judges, professionals, public officials, and others on
matters of policy and procedure, and implements decisions; advises
law enforcement, other governmental agencies, and private citizens
seeking the issuance of criminal complaints as authorized by law;
may confer with and give legal advice to the County Grand Jury;
files, negotiates and tries difficult and/or complex criminal cases;
interviews witnesses; assists with the hiring of staff; trains,
evaluates, directs and supervises all attorney staff of the Criminal
Division; advises and confers with the general public and news
media; speaks before private and public organizations on matters
relating to the department; performs legal research; prepares
periodic and special managerial reports as requested.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS: Active membership in the State Bar of
California; and,
1. Five years of broad and progressively responsible experience as
an attorney, including four years in prosecuting or defending for a
criminal branch and one year of supervisorial responsibility; or,
2. two years of experience performing duties equivalent to the class
of Deputy District Attorney IV with Santa Barbara County; or,
3. a combination of training, education, and experience that is
equivalent to one of the employment standards listed above and that
provides the required knowledge and abilities.
Additional Requirements: Possession of a valid California Class C
Driver’s License is required.
Knowledge of: the duties, powers, limitations and authorities of the
public prosecutor in the criminal justice system; the organization,
powers, and limitations of county governmental functions and the
California Constitution; substantive and procedural criminal and
civil law, including the rules of evidence and the major cases
interpreting and applying the principles expressed in the United
States and California Constitutions.

precedents to difficult legal problems; communicate concisely and
accurately, both orally and in writing; prepare, present and conduct
hearings, trials, and appeals; accomplish job responsibilities
personally and through others; establish and maintain effective
