Building Engineering Inspector, Supervising
Salary: $30.69-$37.47 hourly / $5,338-$6,517 monthly / Range:

DEFINITION: Under general direction, directs and coordinates
building engineering inspection activities in an assigned community
or in a specific inspection program; trains and supervises
inspection and office support staff in the enforcement of state and
local building codes and regulations; and performs related work as
required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This class is the supervisory level
of the Building Engineering Inspector series. It is distinguished
from the Building Engineering Inspector III by its emphasis on
supervision.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
1. Supervises a regional office or a specific inspection program of
the Division of Building and Safety; assigns and reviews the work of
plan checkers, office support staff, and inspectors performing all
types of building and grading inspections.
2. Coordinates work with inspection specialists; advises and
instructs inspectors in code interpretations; reviews unusual or
difficult inspection problems.
3. Supervises studies and performs plan review of building and
grading plans for determining degree of compliance, method, and
schedule of inspections; plan checks and makes field inspections.
4. Mediates and resolves conflicts concerning code interpretation
with builders; investigates complaints; recommends policy and
procedural changes.
5. Prepares reports; supervises the collection of fees; maintains
permit records.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
1. Five years of public agency building engineering and/or grading
inspection experience, including experience with complex commercial
projects and lead work or supervisory experience; or,
2. two years of experience performing duties equivalent to the class
of Building Engineering Inspector III or Grading Inspector, Senior
with Santa Barbara County, including experience with complex
commercial projects and lead work or supervisory experience; or,
3. one year of experience performing duties equivalent to the class
of Building Engineering Inspector Specialist with Santa Barbara
County, including experience with complex commercial projects and
lead work or supervisory experience; or,
4. a combination of training, education, and experience that is
equivalent to one of the employment standards listed above and that
provides the required knowledge, abilities, and certification.
Additional Requirements: Within one year of appointment, the
incumbent must obtain certification by a recognized agency in
building inspection, electrical inspection, and one additional area
as a condition of continued employment. Possession of a valid
California Class C Driver’s License at the time of appointment.
Knowledge of: general building methods and materials; the Uniform
Building Codes (UBC, UMC, UPC, NEC), and state and local laws
relating to building construction and grading; proper inspection
methods; the legal procedures involved in enforcing building codes
and ordinances; principles and methods of supervision.
Ability to: read and interpret building and grading plans and
specifications and enforce their application; prepare clear written
reports; train, direct, and supervise the work of paraprofessional
and office support staff; deal effectively with the public and
secure the cooperation of persons in the construction industry;
represent the department with tact and diplomacy.
