Automotive Mechanic II (#1131)
$19.46-$23.75 hourly / $3,384-$4,131 monthly / Range: 5284
DEFINITION: Under general supervision, performs skilled
repair and maintenance on automobiles and light trucks; and performs
related duties as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: Automotive Mechanic I is
distinguished from Automotive Mechanic II in that incumbents perform
less difficult diagnosis and repair work and do not work on heavy
equipment. Automotive Mechanic II is distinguished from Equipment
Mechanic II in that incumbents do not work exclusively on heavy
equipment.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Services automotive equipment in
accordance with maintenance schedule; inspects, diagnosis, and
repairs mechanical, electrical, and other defects on automotive
vehicles, including, but not limited to tune-ups, relining and
adjusting brakes, tire replacement and balancing, steering gears,
starters, generators, universal joints, and minor body repair;
discusses service and repair problems with operator and supervisor;
maintains records of repairs made, work orders, and time worked;
instructs and leads unskilled assistants; operates 1-ton wrecker in
responding to emergency calls; performs minor emergency repairs in
the field; steam-cleans engines and chassis; performs minor arc and
acetylene welding.
Automotive Mechanic II: In addition to above, inspects,
diagnoses and repairs engines and, air conditioning systems;
performs smog evaluations; repairs heavy construction equipment and
hydraulic systems.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
Automotive Mechanic I: Possession of a valid California
Class C Driver’s License at time of appointment; and,
- one year of semi-skilled experience in the repair of
automotive equipment; or,
- one year of experience performing duties equivalent to the
class of Equipment Service Worker with Santa Barbara County; or,
- a combination of training, education, and experience that is
equivalent to the above standards and that would provide the
required knowledge and abilities.
Automotive Mechanic II: Possession of a valid California
Class C Driver’s License at time of appointment; and,
- three years of skilled experience in the repair of automotive
equipment; or,
- two years of experience performing duties equivalent to the
class of Automotive Mechanic I with Santa Barbara County; or,
- a combination of training, education, and experience that is
equivalent to the above standards and that would provide the
required knowledge and abilities.
Some positions in this class series may require possession of a
valid California Class B Driver's License. Some positions in this
class series may require possession of hazardous materials and tank
vehicle endorsements in addition to a valid California Class B
Driver’s License. Appointees to those positions requiring a Class B
license will be subject to mandatory testing for drugs prior to
beginning work; once on the job, incumbents will be subject to
mandatory testing for drugs and/or alcohol on a random, reasonable
suspicion, post-accident, return-to-duty, and follow-up basis.
Knowledge of: modern methods, equipment, materials, and
tools used in repairing automobiles, light trucks, and other
gas-powered equipment; the theory of internal combustion engines.
Ability to: diagnose mechanical and electrical problems
using electronic diagnostic automotive equipment and determine
appropriate installation, service, and maintenance needs; follow
written and oral instructions; use the equipment, materials, and
tools required in the maintenance and repair of motorized equipment. |
