Animal Shelter Attendant
Salary: $13.82-$16.87 hourly / $2,403-$2,934 monthly /

DEFINITION: Under general supervision, cares for and feeds
the animals at a County shelter, participates in the destruction of
animals, and maintains the shelter facilities and grounds; performs
other duties as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This class is
distinguished from that of Animal Control Officer in that the major
function of the Officer class involves patrolling an assigned area
and enforcing the rules and regulations governing animal control.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:
- Performs animal care duties such as preparing food, feeding,
and providing water; cleaning and disinfecting kennel and cat
cages; washing litter and food pans; sweeping and mopping floors;
picking up fecal material; washing and sweeping debris from walls,
beds, kickplates, and dog run areas.
- Monitors sick, quarantined, and injured animals and observes
them for unusual physical and behavioral conditions; separates and
controls fighting animals; segregates and isolates animals as
necessary; assists the veterinarian or staff with vaccinations and
minor medical treatments; keeps a record on the disposition of
animals; performs a daily count of animals and reports any
condition or inconsistencies to the supervisor or veterinarian as
appropriate.
- Participates in the destruction (euthanasia), by lethal
injection, of dangerous, sick or unwanted animals; assists in
preparing rabies specimens and insures the timely delivery to the
laboratory for testing.
- Shows animals to the public and provides information regarding
licensing, vaccinations, euthanasia, rabies control, pet-owner
responsibilities, spaying, neutering, and adoptions; collects
license, redemption, and adoption fees.
- Completes various records and forms such as kennel cards, logs
of controlled drugs dispensed, daily activity sheets, receipts for
fees, and work order forms for repairs; prepares and issues
citations for license violations; maintains a log and inventory of
food and other animal supply needs.
- Maintains shelter facility; cleans windows and restrooms,
pulls weeds, and makes minor repairs; checks gates and locks for
security purposes and reports any safety or liability concerns to
the supervisor; cleans and stocks animal control vehicles.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS: a combination of training,
education, and experience that would provide the required knowledge
and abilities.
Ability to: handle sick, injured, dangerous, or dead
animals and decomposing animal carcasses in a safe and humane
manner; learn the physical and behavioral characteristics of
animals; learn and recognize symptoms of rabies and other common
animal diseases; destroy (euthanize) dangerous, sick, or unwanted
animals; learn basic first aid treatments; learn the methods and
techniques used in the care and handling of animals; use appropriate
chemicals and cleaning agents; pick up fecal material; analyze a
situation and adopt a course of action; develop and maintain working
relationships with co-workers, volunteers, agencies, and
organizations; make simple arithmetical calculations involving
addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; learn
applicable laws, regulations and ordinances; keep accurate records;
understand and follow instructions; learn computer operations; use
tools and equipment; work independently.
Supplemental Information: Incumbents must be able to lift,
move, or carry animals or objects weighing up to 120 lbs., and use
strong chemicals for disinfecting kennels. Incumbents are expected
to wear a uniform, work shifts, and weekends. |
