ADMHS Rehabilitation Specialist
Salary: $21.84-$26.67 hourly / $3,799-$4,638 monthly /

DEFINITION: Under general direction, evaluates the social
adjustment or vocational needs of persons with mental or emotional
disturbances; develops, implements, and monitors rehabilitation
plans; acts as a consultant for other mental health professionals
and agencies; and performs related duties as required.
Incumbents in this class work within a system of
interdisciplinary departmental teams and/or contract service
agencies providing assessment, prevention, intervention, treatment,
and related ancillary support services via an integrated service
delivery system to people with alcohol and other drug-related
problems, mental illness, and/or co-occurring conditions.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Interviews potential clients to
determine the extent and nature of their mental disability and their
need for and the feasibility of their undertaking vocational
rehabilitation services; conducts pre-vocational and job-seeking
skills groups for clients; counsels and monitors the progress of
individuals participating in rehabilitation programs; consults with
and advises County mental health staff concerning vocational
planning; writes periodic progress reports to case managers and
therapists regarding referred and placed clients; coordinates with
employers and agencies providing vocational services to establish
on-the-job training sites for appropriate clients; plans and
develops programs for individual and group activities of a
self-care, social, and cultural nature that are designed to promote
and improve mental health; observes patients’ reactions and progress
and participates in staff conferences for patient evaluation by
contributing observations on patients’ attitudes, social and
vocational adjustment, and general progress; plans and arranges for
sheltered employment and activities for the severely disabled; and
provides day treatment, case management, or other mental health
services as needed.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
- Possession of a bachelor’s degree in a mental health-related
field and four years of experience in a mental health
setting as a specialist in the fields of vocational or social
adjustment. Up to two years of graduate professional education may
be substituted for the experience requirement on a year-for-year
basis; or,
- possession of an associate’s degree in a mental-health related
field and six years of experience in a mental health
setting as a specialist in the fields of vocational or social
adjustment.
Examples of mental health-related degrees include psychology,
clinical psychology, counseling psychology, rehabilitation
counseling, social work, and marriage and family therapy.
Knowledge of: theory and practice of rehabilitation of
mentally disabled persons; barriers to the employment of mentally
disabled people; characteristics of mental, emotional, and
developmental disorders; laws and legal decisions that impact on
rehabilitation; counseling theory and techniques of mental health
counseling; psychology of personal and vocational adjustment;
standard English grammar and usage; principles and practices of case
management.
Ability to: apply common theories, techniques, and
principles of rehabilitation counseling in the solution of client
problems; establish and maintain an effective counseling
relationship with clients and their families; assess clients’ needs
and abilities to develop appropriate rehabilitation plans; work
effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team; write reports,
correspondence, and chart notations.
